Walkley Foundation 2016 Event Calendar
The foundation’s mission is to celebrate and encourage Australian journalism, telling the stories of our nation and strengthening our democracy. Through our events, outlined here, we aim to promote Australian journalism here and abroad, demonstrate the value of journalism to the general public, recognise and honour great journalism, and guide the craft through an age of major disruption.

April 9-17, Sydney, Dubbo and Melbourne
The Walkley Foundation will host four South Korean journalists in Australia for a series of meetings with media organisations and businesses. This two-way exchange aims to build ties and facilitate more accurate and nuanced reporting about Australia in Korea. Our journalists will be visiting Korea in September; applications open later this year.
May 6, Sydney
The Australian media and supporters come together each year to highlight issues in Australia and the Asia Pacific, and to raise money for the ongoing campaign for press freedom and journalists’ safety.
May 21 – 28, Darwin, Melbourne, Canberra
The Walkley Foundation will host two Indian journalists in Australia for a series of meetings with media organisations and businesses. Similar to our Korea program, this reciprocal exchange aims to build ties and facilitate more accurate and nuanced reporting about Australia in India.
June 9, Melbourne
A must for anyone in corporate and public affairs, brand management or a media advisory role, this event focuses on crafting messages, targeting audiences and using the best emerging tools of the trade.
July 27, Sydney
Innovation, independence and creativity are celebrated at the Walkley Mid-Year Awards program. The night includes awards for Women’s Leadership in Media (new in 2016), the Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year, the Best Freelancer of the Year, the Walkley Grants for Innovation in Journalism and the Jacoby-Walkley Scholarship.
August 10-12, Sydney
Our three-day festival of storytelling attracts entrepreneurial thinkers, digital gurus and storytellers from Australia and around the globe. Satellite talks and trainings engage our journalist community across Australia.
September 8, Sydney
This national media awards program, administered by the Walkley Foundation, recognises and rewards exemplary reporting of violence against women, particularly reporting that highlights the causes and prevention of violence.
October 13, Sydney
A popular event for both media and the public, this event showcases nominees for the Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism and the Walkley Documentary Award.
October 20, Sydney and Melbourne
This is the night when journalists’ dreams of winning a Walkley come a step closer to reality, with the announcement of the finalists in each category. Popular with entrants and Walkley partners alike, these simultaneous events attract hundreds of industry professionals.
November/December, location to be announced
Every journalist dreams of an invitation to this exclusive gala event, where finalists rub shoulders with judges, former winners, and industry and corporate supporters.
Walkley Media Talks
Monthly, State Library of NSW, Sydney
These talks are a cornerstone of the Walkley public program, encouraging discussion in the broader community about the value of journalism in our society. Recorded for the Walkley Talks podcasts, these free talks attract a varied audience, regularly selling out.
Future Fridays & Training
Nationally throughout the year
Talks and workshops on the state of the industry, craft and technology of journalism. These discussions will be focused on innovation, with practical takeaways and networking drinks – an accessible format to complement our digital training program.
