The search is on for Australia’s best journalism of the past year, with entries now open in the 2016 Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism and the 2016 Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism.
The awards are open to all Australian media for work published on any platform between Sept. 1, 2015, and Aug. 31, 2016. Entries close at midnight on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016.
The awards’ 34 categories cover multimedia storytelling, news and feature writing, artwork, cartoons and photography, radio and TV reporting, interviewing, business, international reporting, sport, indigenous affairs, social commentary and investigative journalism: see category descriptions and terms and conditions on the Walkleys’ website. The awards exist to recognise creative, courageous acts of journalism that seek out the truth and give new insight to issues; they reward excellence, independence, innovation and originality in storytelling and distinctive reporting.
The awards are judged in a two-tiered process. In each category a panel of three senior journalists chooses three finalists, and the Walkley Advisory Board picks the winner.
The overall award — the prestigious Gold Walkley — will be selected from all category winners by the Walkley Advisory Board.
This year, for the awards’ 61st year, the Walkleys will return to Brisbane for the winners’ announcement with a gala dinner Dec. 2, thanks to the support of Tourism & Events Queensland.
Kate Jones, the Queensland minister for tourism and major events, said it was fantastic to welcome such a significant event back to Brisbane and host Australia’s media in Queensland, the best place on earth.
“The Walkley Awards has been the gold standard for journalism over the past 60 years and is the pinnacle achievement for the Australian media,” Jones said.
Walkley Trustees chairman Quentin Dempster said, “Through this partnership the Queensland Government is demonstrating its continuing commitment to quality, independent journalism as fundamental to a robust, accountable democracy.”
