The Walkley Foundation is proud to announce a number of new partnerships that will directly support Australian journalists, both emerging and established, and help raise the profile of quality Australian journalism.
New partnerships include funded support for two scholarship positions in newsrooms and a number of funded fellowships for mid-career journalists. Subscribe to the Walkley newsletter for updates on the application process.
In addition, the 2018 Walkley Award-winning stories will be showcased on Apple News.
Walkley Foundation chief executive Louisa Graham said the partnerships signalled encouraging support for Australian journalism.
“It’s heartening to see these organisations’ commitment. Support for the Walkleys and the journalism we recognise is so important.”
The Foundation will offer two new funded scholarships for emerging journalists aged 28 and under.
With support from the William Buckland Foundation, the Walkley Foundation scholarship provides an exciting opportunity for a young journalist from regional Victoria to build hands-on experience and mentorship in a Melbourne newsroom.
A national scholarship supported by Media Super will provide another opportunity to gain newsroom experience.
Applicants will be invited to apply in March 2019 and the winners will be announced at the Walkley Foundation’s Mid-Year Awards ceremony in June.
These scholarships join the long-running Jacoby-Walkley scholarship with Channel Nine, which has provided an invaluable career pathway for the next generation of talented journalists for six years.
The Foundation will also offer new fellowship opportunities for mid-career journalists.
The Our Watch Fellowships Program will be a prestigious leadership and development opportunity for up to 14 outstanding journalists. Delivered as a series of retreats, the program aims to build the capacity of the Fellows as newsroom “champions” of preventing violence against women. Applications will open October 15.
Thanks to support from our philanthropic funder the William Buckland Foundation and partners Media Super and Our Watch, all placements are fully funded and administered by the Walkley Foundation.
2018 Walkley winners to feature on Apple News
This year’s Walkley Award winners will be featured in a dedicated Walkley section in the Apple News app as part of a new collaboration. Apple News will feature winning stories from the 63rd Walkley Awards; each story will be promoted as a Walkley winner from November 22, after the winners are announced.
Apple News will also feature Nikon-Walkley Award finalist photos from October 11, to coincide with the launch of the Nikon-Walkley Photojournalism exhibition at the State Library of NSW.
Designed to amplify and promote the full breadth of Walkley-winning stories of the year, this partnership is part of the Walkley Foundation’s broader mission to educate all Australians on the value of the fourth estate.
Access to Walkley content on Apple News will be free and accessible via QR codes which the Walkley Foundation will promote.
