At the Walkleys, we’re all about great journalism. And as the news industry deals with unprecedented change, we need a little help and invite you apply for the Google News Lab Fellowship.

The Google News Lab seeks to develop the next generation of journalists working to inform, engage, and inspire people around the globe.

The Google News Lab Fellowship offers those interested in journalism and technology the opportunity to spend the summer working at relevant organizations across the world to gain valuable experience and make lifelong contacts and friends.

If you know your way around tech and data, and are into collaborating with journalists, you could find yourself in one of Australia’s best newsrooms and have the opportunity to connect with some of the world’s top technologists at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California.

  • What’s the best way to tell complex and important stories in a mobile-dominated world?
  • How do we engage our audiences in the process of reporting stories?
  • How can data and coding reveal stories that can’t be found through traditional reporting?
  • How can new technologies help to not just inform, but captivate audiences?
  • In what ways can new technology help our newsrooms find and gather and tell stories more efficiently?

Two Fellows will join the ABC newsroom and product team for eight weeks in late 2017, as well as spending a week at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California. The Fellows will join a cross-disciplinary team of journalists, designers and developers working to tell important stories on digital platforms.

  • Think analytically and have strong research, writing and communication skills.
  • Bring original and innovative ideas about how technology can assist in the pursuit of public interest journalism.

You will be working closely with some of Australia’s most experienced journalists on innovative projects that could be seen by hundreds of thousands of Australians.
