Digital Media - GET AHEAD OF THE GAME

The Walkley Foundation Training Programme, supported by the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL), invites you to power up your mastery of digital technology through our course Social Newsgathering: Tools of the Trade.

The course will be presented in February 2012 in Melbourne by Claire Wardle (clairewardle.com/about/), a leading UK social media and journalism expert, and in Sydney by Julie Posetti (www.canberra.edu.au/faculties/arts-design/staff/journalism/profiles/posetti), broadcaster and University of Canberra journalism academic.

Social media is changing journalism, the methods of creation as well as consumption.

This course will focus on the tools of social newsgathering, demonstrating how social media can be used to find original stories, case studies, experts, photos, video and audio.

There will also be a discussion of specific case studies from the around the world (local, national and international examples) as a way of learning what can work well and what doesn’t work.

We will also explore the potential pitfalls and ethical concerns that surround social media, and will learn how to avoid them.

1. Introduction to social newsgathering: what can it offer journalists and what are the pitfalls?

2. Doing effective research

3. Finding people and case studies using facebook and linkedin

4. Using RSS to set up your own personalised wire service

5. Advanced Twitter techniques

6. Verification, copyright and permissions

7. Ethical and professional considerations

Before the course, participants should sign up for twitter, netvibes and google accounts, make sure they are verified by returning the necessary email confirmations, and remember the passwords! (This is always the most difficult part of the whole day.)
