Scholarships and Fellowships: Information for Media Partners

The Walkley Foundation Scholarship and Fellowships program places talented young journalists with leading media organisations for a minimum of three months. The program is designed to provide an emerging young journalist with a supported hands-on experience, whilst also providing a funded position within a newsroom.

How it works

The program provides media organisations with a funded entry-level newsroom placement. The Walkley Foundation manages the following processes: application and verification; selection committee, with a representative(s) from the participating news organisation invited to sit on the selection panel; and management of placement and all charges and payment of a stipend to the recipient. The scholarship stipend is based on a journalist entry level salary; the fellowship stipend scaled accordingly for a mid-career journalist.

As the hosting media organisation you will be required to provide an entry-level journalism position for the duration of the placement. They should be incorporated as part of the team in the newsroom with assigned duties.  You will need to provide an on-site workstation and facilities, reporting lines, and public liability insurance.

You are also required to nominate a judge(s) for involvement in the selection process. The Walkley Foundation is known for the integrity and calibre of its judging processes, and the same standards apply to this program. Past journalists on the selection panel for scholarships have included Jenny Brockie (SBS), Darren Wick (Director of News at Nine), Hamish Macdonald (The Project, Channel 10) and Marc Fennell (SBS).

Acknowledgment

Your organisation will be acknowledged as the participating media partner on all application forms, reporting and promotion of the program. You will receive a report following the placement, and any other information you may require for your communications. The judges are engaged to assess applications in a rigorous selection process that has the same integrity as that applied to the Walkley Awards.

Your support will be acknowledged during the scholarships/fellowships announcement at the annual Walkley Foundation Mid-Year Awards ceremony attended by over 350 members of the media and the Foundation’s supporters and partners.
