WIN News Broadcast Scholarship

Scholarship Overview

This scholarship is an opportunity to launch your career as a broadcast reporter in one of the most exciting regional newsrooms in Australia. WIN News headquarters is located in the stunning coastal city of Wollongong, 90 minutes south of Sydney, and has been the launchpad for many major names in the Australian media.

The judges are looking for aspiring journalists keen to follow their dream of a career in broadcast media, and passionate about working in regional news.

The opportunity is open to an outstanding student in their final year of a journalism degree, or a journalism graduate who has completed their studies within the past 12 months and who has not engaged in paid work with a television broadcast network.

Scholarship Details

The 2024 winner will receive:

• 10-week placement at WIN News in Wollongong, with the opportunity to:
  • Work alongside the WIN News Chief of Staff, editors, and camera operators to develop story ideas.
  • Shadow reporters in the field and learn from news presenters in the studio.
  • Research, compile and produce stories for the WIN weekday news bulletin and learn what it takes to compile a ratings-winning bulletin.
  • Gain an understanding of news stories affecting a regional community.
  • Develop a working knowledge of media law.
  • Source, write, and voice reports, which will be broadcast in the 5.30pm WIN News bulletins, under the guidance of the News Director and Chief of Staff.
• A stipend of $10,000, which will be paid fortnightly to support accommodation and living expenses for the duration of the scholarship.

Thanks to the support of WIN News there is no cost to enter this program.

What you will need to submit

To complete your application you will need to upload the following:

• A copy of your current CV in PDF format
• 3 x examples of your best work. This can be in the form of links to an online story.
  • Note: if your story is behind a paywall or requires registration, you will need to upload it as a file, in the form of a PDF document, a video MP4 or audio MP3.
• A copy of your academic transcript
• A reference from someone who can describe your interest and experience in journalism and how the Scholarship will benefit your career
