You can’t afford to miss Storyology in 2014. Driven by innovation, the program will be a four day exploration of the latest trends, techniques and tools for storytelling – mapping the landscape of today’s media to help you best position yourself in this evolving space. Opening with a laser focus on the entrepreneurial side of innovation on December 1, followed by a program geared to freelance operators on December 2, Storyology will inspire you to create your best work yet – and make a buck as well.
We’ll explore the rise of citizen journalism, social media and user generated content and how storytellers can engage with and verify user generated content. We’ll also examine open journalism and how storytellers use digital tools to collaborate and report across borders as well as the latest and greatest models and sources of funding.
Innovation Day (December 1)
Innovation is one of the hottest buzzwords of the moment – but when it comes to innovating how we make and fund journalism, how is Australia doing? We’ll survey the trends, look at who’s doing brilliant work, and break down just what it takes to make innovation a reality. What can journalism learn from the start-up world? What’s the role for non-profits? And let’s not forget profits!We’ll explore the world of entrepreneurial journalism, with practical masterclasses on the planning, skills, tech, business structures and funding sources to get your big idea off the ground. Hear from people who’ve tried, failed and lived to tell the tale – and those who’ve gambled and won. There’s money to be made, and a stronger future for journalism to be built. Get on board and hear from innovators, entrepreneurs and reporters at the cutting edge about the tools, techniques and trends to watch.
Freelance Focus (December 2)
Targeted at freelancers but relevant to all storytellers running a small business, this day covers everything Australia’s growing community of independent operators needs to know: mastering new tools of the trade, monetising online content, developing new storytelling techniques, discovering publishing outlets, pitching to editors and practical advice on running a start-up.In the world of post-institutional journalism, learn how to revalue and diversify your skills to get a bigger piece of the pie.
Storyology Main Program (December 3 & 4)
Over a day and a half, we’ll present professional development opportunities and discussions, aiming to capture as much of the industry’s diversity as possible while retaining a practical focus.We’ve invited storytellers from mainstream media to filmmaking, radio, books, gaming, photography and the theatre. Topics include digital and data journalism, virality and sharing, interactive documentary, collaborative non-profit journalism, audience engagement, screenwriting, funding models, crowdfunding, entrepreneurship, adaptation, publishing avenues and more.
