Angela Stengel

Angela Stengel is the Online Editor for ABC Classic FM and Classic 2. Her role covers content strategy and social media. She works closely with developers, designers and user experience experts, and is the link between technical and editorial teams.

Angela joined ABC in 2008 working for ABC Innovation, testing boundaries in content and experience delivery and breaking new ground producing projects such as Campaign Pulse, a site tracking social media trends in the 2011 Federal election.

Since graduating from Macquarie University with degrees in Media and Arts (Music) Angela has sought new ways of telling stories at FBi radio, Historic Houses Trust, Radio National, Cyclic Defrost and even courtside at the table tennis for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Despite her love for technology, Angela has realised that a compelling story should make you forget the medium.

Hi, what’s your name?

Angela Stengel

Where do you hail from?

Girl from the Gong, long-time Sydneysider.

Who do you work for?

Tell us a bit about you – how did you get to where you are today?

Right place at the right time? I graduated from Macquarie Uni with a Media degree at a time when being able to write a sentence AND understand the internet was seen as a rarity. I learnt invaluable lessons from traditional media experience – at local papers, FBi radio and street press – but never strayed far from digital projects and they always found me too.

What are your career highlights?

Launching ABC Classic 2, a second classical music station for ABC. Being involved in the early days of social media for ABC. Working on Campaign Pulse, a site tracking social media trends during the turbulent 2011 Federal election.

Who or what inspires you to get out of bed in the morning?

Solving problems and building things with like-minded digital people. Travelling to new places for different perspectives and fun adventures.

Which other storytellers do you admire?

Cory Doctorow for weaving important and scary futurist ideas into compelling fiction. Neil Gaiman for his wonderful real-life storytelling ability that has you on the edge of your seat. ABC 4 Corners and Foreign Correspondent journos for finding stories I’d never otherwise hear.  The person behind for inspiring ABC Classic 2 to tell new stories about old things.

What do you plan to share at Storyology?

A content experiment that breaks from the norm in classical music coverage – both in design and storytelling.

Where can we find you?
