Julie Shapiro is a career listener and Executive Producer of RN’s Creative Audio Unit, including the sister weekly radio shows/podcasts Radiotonic and Soundproof. In 2000, Shapiro co-founded the internationally acclaimed, Chicago-based Third Coast International Audio Festival, and was Artistic Director of the organization for fourteen years. Shapiro has taught radio to university students, presented listening events and at conferences all over the globe, consulted with radio organizations of all stripes, and produced stories for the public radio airwaves in the US and beyond. Before landing happily in public radio, she worked at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, and at countless independent records stores across the US.

Tell us a bit about you – how did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always felt connected to the world through listening, from music to stories to the natural and unnatural sounds around us. This led to a career based on close listening and engaging with makers and listeners around audio work of all stripes.
What are your career highlights?
Co-founding and Artistic Directing the Third Coast International Audio Festival for nearly fourteen years was one long highlight; traveling around the world and meeting radiomakers from all over; moving to Australia to help run RN’s new Creative Audio Unit.
Who or what inspires you to get out of bed in the morning?
The possibility of discovering – and/or hearing – something new. Coffee and a banana. Fresh air. People.
