Journalists, developers and designers from the best newsrooms in Australia will spend two days this week hacking the news at the Walkley Editors Lab competition, presented by the Walkley Foundation and the Global Editors Network with support from Google News Lab.
The 2017 lineup of teams for the March 9-10 event includes ABC News, The Age, Australian Associated Press, The Conversation, The Daily Telegraph, Junkee Media, News Corp Australia, Newsroom.ly, SBS, Storyful, Sydney Morning Herald, The Vocal, and a freelance team led by 2016 Jacoby-Walkley Scholarship winner Taylor Denny.
The 13 teams will hack this year on the theme of audience engagement.
“It’s one of the central problems for the media in our noisy, ever-changing digital age — find the audience, listen to them, keep their attention, make an impact on their lives,” said Jacqui Park, Walkley Foundation CEO. “Encouraging innovation at this event is part of the Walkley Foundation’s vital role in future-proofing the industry.”
“The quality of the projects we saw at last year’s edition was very high,” said Sarah Toporoff, GEN programme manager. “We’re looking forward to seeing what the teams come up with around engagement this year, especially since the media landscape is changing faster than ever.”
The GEN Editors Lab program is a worldwide series of hackathons hosted by leading news organisations such as The New York Times, The Guardian and El País. Editors Lab brings together developers, journalists and designers from top newsrooms to build news prototypes during an intensive two-day competition. The Global Editors Network has already run four successful Editors Lab seasons.
The winning team receives a free trip to compete in the international Editors Lab Final in Vienna, at the Global Editors Summit — the World Cup of newsroom innovation. Winners will be chosen by a jury of experts: Jonathan Richards, Google Creative Lab; Damien Cave, New York Times; John Bergin, Online News Association; Kate Golden, Walkley Foundation; and Sarah Toporoff, Global Editors Network.
