Karl Hilzinger, The Australian Financial Review, “DVD Piracy”
After a short stint in television and film production, Karl Hilzinger joined Fairfax’s photographic department at a time when darkrooms were gradually dispensed with and replaced with digital equipment. He is now a Photoshop graphic artist.
Published on page one of The Australian Financial Review, Hilzinger’s illustration of “DVD Piracy” was a montage of photographic elements. By transforming DVDs into a pirate ship sailing on the high seas, he conveyed the theme of the story.
Judges’ comments
Imaginative and well executed, this exceptional piece of artwork is a powerful image that demonstrates Hilzinger’s artistic ability. His wonderful high-tech ship brings together video piracy and good old-fashioned high seas drama. The idea is very
clever and the work conveys a real sense of threat and danger.
