Television - Television Current Affairs, Feature, Documentary or Broadcast Special (More than 20 Minutes) - Winners Matthew Brown and Wayne Harley, Foreign Correspondent, ABC TV, "West Bank, Love and Betrayal" Reporter Matthew Brown and producer Wayne Harley pulled together the human angle from all sides in their story on an Islamic terrorist cell in Jenin. The cell sent a suicide bomber into Tel Aviv – and meanwhile, Israeli intelligence sent a Palestinian to infiltrate the cell. Brown and Harley tracked the fallout, obtaining emotive interviews with the bomber’s father and the young widow of one of the victims, as well as gaining startling access to the cell itself. Much footage had to be shot with night vision as the Israeli military searched for the cell members. At least two men who appear in the film have reportedly been killed since; and at one point militants threatened Brown and Harley, thinking they were Israeli agents. Brown has been with the ABC for 13 years, starting out as a radio reporter and news presenter for Triple J. He worked on Background Briefing and Four Corners before being appointed Middle East correspondent in 2005. He was highly commended for a Walkley in 1993 for best investigative report on radio. Harley won a Walkley in 1990 for best TV news or current affairs camera work, and was highly commended for Walkleys in 1988 and 1991. In more than 20 years with the ABC he has travelled extensively and helped develop Foreign Correspondent as executive producer. Judges’ comments This story is powerful frontline television journalism. At significant personal risk, the team obtained rare full-face interviews and action footage from inside an Islamic terrorist cell. Brave, matter-of-fact reporting that cut through the "Middle East fatigue". |
