Andrew Taylor, Four Corners, ABC TV, "Forward Base Afghanistan"

Cinematic camera work belied the dangerous filming conditions in this visually driven report on the experience of soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan. From the sparse beauty of the region to the work of the soldiers in the villages, Andrew Taylor’s pictures superbly told the story of the Australian Defence Force engagement in Afghanistan.

Taylor is a senior cameraman and has been working at the ABC for more than 20 years. He has had postings to ABC bureaus in London and Moscow. For the past 10 years he has been filming for Four Corners, based in Sydney.

Taylor has a strong history in this field, taking home Walkleys for best cinematography in 1994 and 1995, plus 20 Australian Cinematographers Society Awards. He was granted accreditation to the Australian Cinematographers Society in 2002.

Judges’ comments

Despite filming in a war zone under difficult and dangerous conditions, Taylor consistently produced beautiful pictures, shot composition, framing and exposure; camera craft at its best. Technically excellent, this was news footage you could watch on the big screen.
