Originally from Melbourne, Holly Humphries has always loved to learn the depth of peoples’ stories. She has a passion for international relations and has spent much of her adult life working in China and travelling overseas. Her academic background is in Chinese language and cultural studies. Upon reading the book “Do What You Are”, she was inspired by a case study of an anchor woman to study journalism and she completed her Master of Journalism in 2013. She is currently working in education in China, and hopes to further develop her journalism career upon return to Australia at the end of 2014.

Judges’ comments:

“Holly Humphreys’ story on the fate of male calves born into the dairy industry shone a light on a confronting and little-known aspect of dairy farming. She wrote objectively on a complex, emotionally charged topic. We were impressed by her immersive research and vivid storytelling technique. Congratulations Holly.”
