Six outstanding new documentaries have been longlisted for the 2020 Walkley Documentary Award and will be screened at Sydney’s State Library of NSW in October, giving the public a free viewing of the finest work in the field over the past year.

The six films tackle different themes, are in different styles and highlight different modes of documentary storytelling, but all help to showcase the very best in Australian long-form journalism.

2020 Walkley Documentary Award Longlist

  • Against Our Oath, Heather Kirkpatrick, Waratah Films
  • An Australian Hero: Keith Payne VC, Max Uechtritz, Ray Martin and Andrew Taylor, SBS

  • Debi Marshall Investigates: Frozen Lies, Debi Marshall, Chris Thorburn, Madeleine Hetherton, Rebecca Barry and Team, Foxtel and Media Stockade

  • Loyalty and Leaks: The Untold Gilmore Story, Michael Pignataro, WIN News, WIN Network

  • Revelation, Sarah Ferguson, Nial Fulton and Tony Jones, ABC and In Films

  • Storm in a Teacup, Nia Pericles and Celia Tait, ABC and Artemis Media

All six films will be screened free for the public at the State Library of NSW on Wednesday October 14. Please RSVP as places are strictly limited to 30 seats for each screening, following the State Library’s COVID-19 safety procedure.

  • 1.10pm: Loyalty and Leaks: The Untold Gilmore Story (part 1)
  • 2.10pm: Against Our Oath
  • 4.00pm: Storm in a Teacup
  • 5.10pm: Debi Marshall Investigates: Frozen Lies (part 3)
  • 6.20pm: Revelation (part 3)

A shortlist of three finalists for the Walkley Documentary Award will be announced on Thursday October 15.

The winners of all the 65th Walkley Awards will be announced via live broadcast on SKY NEWS EXTRA (Foxtel Channel 604) and streamed on the Walkley website ( from 7.00pm AEDT on Friday November 20.
