If you missed our Masterclass webinars earlier this year with some of Australia’s best journalists, we have good news for you – they’ll all be available to watch on demand online, rolling out each week, supported by the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.

Learn how to approach headline writing in a range of ways with the 2019 Walkley Award-winner for Best Headline, Baz McAlister.

Baz will walk attendees through topics including:

  • Different styles of headline writing (from short tabloid-style to more factual, online-appropriate headlines)
  • Finding inspiration for wordplay and humorous headlines
  • Basic principles of headline writing for search engine optimisation (SEO) and what makes a good online headline
  • Crafting captions and other hooks into the story

This masterclass is a great opportunity for journalists and editors to add a string to their editing bow with an award-winning expert, and you’ll come away with an understanding of what makes a good headline and a toolbox of techniques for crafting great headlines.

Baz McAlister is a writer and editor originally from Northern Ireland. He has worked in various roles at News Corp Australia over the past decade, including as deputy night editor on The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail, and editor of Qweekend. He is a four-time winner, eight-time finalist and frequent MC of Queensland’s Clarion Awards. He won the 2019 Walkley Award for best Headline, Caption or Hook and was a finalist for the award in 2018.
